Lending your vehicle to a friend or family member can be a kind gesture, but it also raises questions when that driver receives a traffic ticket. In Georgia, the ticket generally follows the person who committed the traffic violation, rather than automatically transferring to the vehicle owner. However, the incident can still create insurance considerations.

Who Receives the Ticket?

When a driver is stopped for a moving violation, the citation is generally issued to the person operating the vehicle. The Georgia Department of Driver Services maintains individual driving records, and traffic convictions can affect the driver’s record.

That does not mean the vehicle owner’s auto insurance is completely unaffected. Insurers may consider driving records when evaluating risk and determining policy terms. Georgia’s Office of the Commissioner of Insurance and Safety Fire lists driving history among the factors commonly used by insurers when evaluating auto insurance.

When Someone Regularly Drives Your Car

A one-time loan to a friend is different from allowing another person to regularly use your vehicle. If someone in your household frequently drives your car, tell your insurance professional. Your insurer may need accurate information about household drivers and vehicle use.

If you live in or around Snellville, GA, and allow another person to drive your vehicle, review your policy whenever driving arrangements change. Keeping driver information current can help prevent questions later about who was operating the vehicle.
